Review a Bitcoin PSBT before an external signer approves payment

Learn what a partially signed transaction is for, how to compare outputs, change and fees, and why an unsigned preview is not yet a completed payment.

Understand the handoff between funding and signing

A PSBT lets software prepare a transaction for review and signing in another context. That separation is useful only if the signer checks the actual outputs and fee, not merely the application's label. A funded PSBT can still require signatures, finalization and broadcast before a recipient sees a network transaction.

Bitcoin Core's walletcreatefundedpsbt RPC documents inputs, output amounts, automatic funding, fee-rate settings, change position and options governing replaceability. The public source establishes this starting point; its date and scope belong beside the specific decision in the PSBT review sheet.

Match each recipient output

A transaction may contain several outputs and a displayed total is not enough to identify their destinations. Compare every recipient address and amount with the receiving instruction at the time of signing. Read each destination as an output rather than trusting the aggregate amount in the coordinating wallet. Compare its full address and BTC value with current receiving instructions.

A truncated address or friendly contact name cannot replace the exact bytes the signer approves. If the signer truncates the address, use a documented verification feature or decline. A contact nickname is not the byte sequence ultimately authorized.

Distinguish change from the intended payment

Input selection can create an output returning value to the sender's wallet. Identify the change output and its wallet ownership before interpreting the total leaving the inputs. A funded transaction can use several inputs and return change to the sender. Identify which output is the intended payment and which belongs to wallet control.

An unfamiliar change destination is a stop signal, not a minor presentation detail. An unfamiliar change address can signal a configuration or signing problem. Do not dismiss it because the recipient output looks correct.

Inspect the miner fee and unit

Fee rate is quoted per virtual byte while the total miner fee depends on transaction size. Record both values and compare them with your spending boundary and current wallet estimate. Write both the absolute miner fee and its sat/vB rate, then compare the wallet's estimated virtual size. Those numbers measure different aspects of the same cost.

A chosen confirmation target is an estimate, not a guaranteed arrival time. A target number of blocks is not a deadline. If the fee exceeds the spending boundary, rebuild or postpone before signatures are supplied.

Check the signer's independent display

An external signer may render less information than the coordinating wallet. Compare the device display to the prepared sheet, especially destination and amount. The external device should independently show the recipient and amount that matter. A phone or desktop preview may disagree with the device display after a malicious alteration.

If critical data is absent or unreadable, postpone signing and investigate instead of trusting a green button. When the device cannot show enough detail, do not use its approval as a ceremonial click. Resolve the missing display or choose a safer signing workflow.

Separate signature, finalization and broadcast

An approved signature is not the same as a finalized network transaction or account credit. Document which component holds the signed PSBT, whether finalization succeeded and the eventual transaction identifier. Track the PSBT as prepared, signed, finalized and broadcast stages. Save the eventual txid only after an actual network submission succeeds.

Do not send a second payment merely because a wallet still says pending. A recipient cannot locate an unsigned draft on-chain. If the account still shows no credit, establish which stage failed before creating another payment.

Use the Bitcoin Core RPC as a technical reference

The documentation grounds the mechanics of funding, fee selection and change in a specific software version. Reopen the named HTTPS page when applying the PSBT review sheet; an internal SignalBet guide is context, not the authority for a changing fact.

It does not endorse a wallet, guarantee confirmation or establish that a gaming service accepts a particular Bitcoin route. Do not extend that source into a conclusion about an individual case it does not cover.

Authorize only a fully understood transaction

The signer should be able to reproduce the destination, value and cost without relying on a chat screenshot. Recheck the disputed item in the PSBT review sheet before a consequential action and retain the dated answer.

A useful rehearsal is to take a transaction that has not been signed and describe its parts to another adult without showing a seed phrase. Identify inputs as funding, each recipient output as a destination, change as value controlled by the wallet, and the miner fee as a distinct cost. Compare the recipient's full address on the signer with the current instruction, not a saved contact nickname. Write down what the device can and cannot display. If it cannot show a critical output, stop and choose a verifiable workflow. After signing, distinguish the file or PSBT returned by the device from a finalized transaction and a broadcast txid. Only the latter can be checked by a receiving service. This sequence prevents a ceremonial approval from replacing actual review.

  • The signer must verify actual destination bytes rather than a coordinating app's friendly label.
  • Unrecognized change is a reason to stop before a device signs the transaction.
  • A sat/vB rate and total satoshi fee have different units and magnitudes.
  • A confirmation button cannot compensate for a device display missing critical output details.
  • A funded PSBT may still be unsigned, unfinalized and absent from the network.

Crypto transfers can be irreversible; never use a payment experiment to chase gambling losses. Adults 18+ must also meet local legal-age rules. Gambling is optional entertainment, not income or debt recovery. Protect essential money, set time and spending limits, never borrow or chase losses, and use the responsible-play centre for a break, blocking, exclusion or support.
